Astigmatism

What is Astigmatism?

DISORDERS OF REFRACTION

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that occurs when light entering the eye does not focus evenly on the retina. Instead, the image is focused in two different planes, either in front of or behind the retina, leading to blurred vision at both distance and near. This optical distortion results from an irregular shape of the eye or the focusing system, preventing it from being perfectly spherical. Often, astigmatism can coexist with other refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). Fortunately, corrective lenses specifically designed as toric lenses can effectively address this issue, allowing for clearer vision by compensating for the non-uniform curvature of the eye. With the right prescription, individuals with astigmatism can significantly improve their visual clarity and quality of life.
