Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the area of the retina responsible for central vision. It primarily manifests in two forms: dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD develops gradually as cellular debris accumulates under the retina, leading to the death of retinal cells and gradual loss of central vision. Vitamin supplements are often recommended to help slow the progression of the disease. In contrast, wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow behind the retina, resulting in rapid vision changes. Early detection is crucial, as treatments such as laser therapy or injectable medications can help manage the condition and preserve vision. Risk factors for AMD include age, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle choices, emphasizing the importance of regular eye examinations, especially for those at higher risk.
